What this is
Trout Truck is a free, static mirror of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's weekly trout (and occasional catfish) planting schedule, organised by water, with the full planting history this site has observed — CDFW's own page shows a rolling window of about a year, and this site keeps every week it has recorded after that window moves on.
The name comes from what anglers call the hatchery truck that delivers planted trout. The site shows CDFW's published weekly schedule, not where any truck is right now.
Privacy: the website counts visits; the app collects nothing
This website uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read. Specifically:
- Google Analytics does not load at all if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, or if you press “Opt out of analytics” at the bottom of any page, which this browser then remembers. Nothing is then sent to Google and no analytics cookie is set.
- Otherwise, Google's analytics script records the pages you view, your browser and device type, and your approximate location. Google signals and ad personalisation are off, and there are no ads on this site.
- In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, analytics cookies are denied by default, so Google Analytics sets no cookie there.
- No account, no email address, no sign-up, anywhere on this site.
- Calendar subscriptions (.ics) are plain files with no analytics; your calendar app fetches them directly from this site on whatever schedule it chooses. This site does not know who has subscribed.
GitHub Pages, which hosts this site, also keeps standard web server logs (IP address, requested path, timestamp) — see GitHub's own privacy statement. The full details are in the privacy policy. The iOS app has no analytics of any kind.
The iOS app
A companion iOS app lets you favourite waters and browse the same planting history as this site, free. A one-time in-app purchase — not a subscription — adds a local notification when a favourite appears in a new week's schedule. The notification is generated on your device from a snapshot the app downloads periodically in the background — there is no push service, no account, and no server that knows which waters you favourited. The schedule updates weekly, so alerts arrive on CDFW's schedule, not instantly.
The app is not in the App Store yet; this page will link to it once it is.

Accuracy
CDFW: "all fish plants are subject to change depending on road, water, weather and operational conditions." Every date on this site is a week, never a day — CDFW does not publish a more specific date, on purpose ("to avoid focusing excess fishing activity immediately after a plant"). Nothing on this site should be read as confirmation that a plant happened.
